Principal & Dean’s Message – Class of 2025

Dear Admitted Students,

I am excited to extend my heartfelt congratulations on your acceptance to the NUST Law School
(NLS) at the National University of Sciences and Technology. On behalf of the entire faculty and
staff, I would like to warmly welcome you to our law school community. Our comprehensive
approach to legal education ensures you will acquire the knowledge, skills, and values necessary
to succeed as a lawyer-leader in the legal field and beyond. Additionally, our small class sizes,
low faculty-to-student ratio, and professional mentoring for all students foster a supportive
environment designed to help you discover your unique professional calling.

Your admission reflects your outstanding achievements, dedication, and potential as a future
legal professional. You are about to start a remarkable journey into the legal field—a journey I
began many years ago that has opened many excellent professional doors for me. From founding
a law firm and litigating cases to serving as pro bono counsel for the immigrant community in
Connecticut, to sitting on the bench in Connecticut’s criminal, civil, and juvenile courts, and now
serving as a law school principal and dean—all of these roles were made possible by my law
degree. Be encouraged!

I look forward to seeing where your professional path takes you.
I am compelled to quote Michael L. Coyne, Dean of the Massachusetts School of Law –
Andover, who so aptly captures the essence of the legal profession: Lawyers lead Congress, our
statehouses, and our businesses. They are the leaders of our society, defenders of our
Constitution, and agents of change. Lawyers have helped make our lives safer and allowed
us to live longer. Babies no longer suffocate when their heads get stuck between crib rails,
cars do not explode as often when gas tanks rupture on impact, and women no longer risk
death or sterilisation because of unsafe birth control devices. We are all free to live our
lives as we choose — not as others demand. Thank a lawyer.

I’ve mentioned this before, but it’s worth repeating. It has been said that “those who are
given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who is entrusted with much, much
more will be asked.” This is especially true for those entering the legal profession.
Presidents, paupers, and people from all walks of life turn to lawyers with their darkest
secrets and most troubling problems when these issues become too overwhelming. A solid
legal education develops the intellect, skills, and confidence needed to face these challenges
bravely. The courage to defend the indefensible comes from within, but it must be supported
by strong preparation and education.

At NLS, we aim to develop lawyers who are skilled advocates, effective partners, and
trusted experts. A lawyer should be a wise advisor, strategist, and counselor. Law schools
should cultivate these skills in their students. Abraham Lincoln said, “As a peacemaker,
the lawyer has a superior opportunity of being a good man.” At NLS, you will learn how to
seek accommodation and compromise while practicing ethical professional conduct. NLS
strives to produce graduates of a caliber that matches international standards! You will
develop litigation skills and other adversarial strategies, but not at the expense of a fair
settlement or the pursuit of justice.

Once again, congratulations on your admission! We are confident you will thrive at NLS and
contribute significantly to the legal profession as a lawyer-leader of excellence, integrity, and
vision. We look forward to welcoming you in person at the new student orientation this
September!

Sincerely,
The Honorable M. Nawaz Wahla,
Judge, Superior Court CT. (Ret.)
Founding Principal & Dean and Professor of Law – NLS
